All students are required to wear an ASTM certified riding helmet. Long pants are required - Do not wear tight pants - wear stretch or loose fitting pants to allow for leg and hip flexibility. Boots or closed shoes with a small heel are preferred. Sandals, clogs, tennis shoes, or open shoes are not allowed.

Whether you are a beginner, an advanced rider or just getting back in the saddle, Dou"B"le J Farm has a lesson program for you. We offer lessons for the novice rider all the way through to the advanced rider. We are experienced and well trained in all aspects of horsemanship especially Western Pleasure and Timed Event riding. We are here to help you attain your riding goals, whether you want to ride for pleasure or compete successfully.

As always, our emphasis is on safety and fun.

Horseback Birthday Parties!!

Thank you for choosing Dou"B"le J Farm for your child's birthday party. We are pleased to announce that we are now offering horseback birthday parties for kids and adults of all ages and we offer a safe, family friendly environment for your party. Please complete the Party Agreement and Liability Release Form and bring it with you the day of the party. Each party participant will need to have a release form completed before the start of the party. Dou"B"le J Farm will provide the needed forms for the participants.

We offer different packages to suit your needs. The parties are on Saturdays offering a 1 or 2 hour party. Or, we're happy to consult with you to customize your birthday party.

You may choose one of the following packages:

Details and Prices 2011

We offer four different packages for you to choose from. The packages are setup for different size parties. Depending on how many children you plan on attending and how long you want them to be able to be on a horse will determine which package is right for you.

Party Package #1

One horse saddled up. One child will ride at a time and will be led around the pasture. This works well for five or six children attending. Time for presents to be opened, and cake or snacks that you provide is included and will be done after riding time.
$125 per hour – $15.00 each additional child

Party Package #2

Two horses saddled up. This allows for two children to be led around the pasture at a time. If you have more than eight children attending, this package will work best. Time for presents to be opened, and cake or snacks that you provide is included and will be done after riding time.
$175 per hour - $ 15.00 each additional child

Party Package #3

Three horses saddled up. This means that three children can be lead on a horse at the same time. We have found that for groups of fifteen or more that this is the best package to choose. Time for presents to be opened, and cake or snacks that your provide is included and will be done after riding time.
$225 per hour - $ 15.00 each additional child

Additional Party Package

In addition to the horseback rides, we also offer an Additional Party Package. This package includes the following things:

Supervised time with our other farm animals and our miniature horse Smoochie!

Each party participant will get to groom a horse.

Our Dou”B”le J Staff will grill hot dogs or hamburgers that you provide.

The party package automatically covers an hour to an hour and a half to allow for the supervised time with other farm animals, grooming a horse, opening presents, having cake or snacks, and time to eat hotdogs or hamburgers that you provide.

Please let us know if you would like us to prepare the hotdogs or hamburgers at the beginning or at the end of the party.

The party package costs $60 and can be added to any of the above riding packages.

Extras and what you can do at the party

Please feel free to serve cake and ice cream or other snacks. We will not be providing any of these items are we will not be responsible for their setup or removal. We will have trash cans and bags on the premises for you to use as needed. Feel free to bring other decorations you can hang with tape or staples. We just ask that you take these decorations with you when you leave.

If you have a question about whether or not anything else will be provided or supplied at the party, please ask. As a general rule, unless this document specifically states it, then it is not included and must be requested and will incur an additional cost.

Payment details and a note about prices

A $75 deposit will be required in order to schedule a birthday party. This reserves your spot on the calendar and ensures no lessons or other events will conflict with your party. It also ensures that the additional help we need will be available and on hand for your event. All reservations are made on a first come, first serve basis. Until your deposit is received, no reservations or plans are made.

You may want to come and visit the barn and meet the horses before you make your reservation. We welcome such visits and just ask that you notify us before you come out so we can be sure to be available for your visit. You can schedule an appointment by email double_j_farm@charter.net or by calling 205-792-4940. We won’t be able to accommodate you if you fail to schedule an appointment in advance due to our lesson and camp program.

If you are prepared to make your reservation, please mail in the form and be sure to fill in all blanks as best as you can and to include your deposit check. Make all checks payable to Judy Johnson.

A non-refundable deposit of $75.00 (credited to the amount of party package) is required to schedule all birthday parties.

Her mom is a beautiful palomino mare named Dolly and her dad is a World Champion palomino stallion!

I know you are wondering why chestnut? Well, a palomino is a chestnut horse with one cream gene. The shades have a far range, from pale, almost cremello-color, to a dark chocolate color. There was a 25% chance to get a chestnut.

OUR GOAL~TO SHARE A UNIQUE HORSE CAMP EXPERIENCE

Four days of absolute fun in a safe, wholesome and supportive environment where campers experience adventure while building character and confidence. The instruction and activities at this camp will challenge and improve each campers riding skills. Lessons emphasize communication using the four natural aids to control the horse. We focus on developing the proper body alignment, balance, independent seat in each rider. Fully supervised, individual attention and foremost of all, safety is foundational, where we aim to produce competent riders who appreciate and practice with intelligence and competence, all aspects of sound horsemanship. Campers will learn through fun and meet new friends! We believe that horses are good for people and if properly educated, people can be good for horses! We find that lessons learned working with horses help develop skills that last a lifetime.

For the seriously "horse crazy", we highly recommend two or more sessions. Subsequent lessons will foster a closer union between horse and handler. The first week of camp is very active in their learning stages of new things, with goals that are designed for each class that builds on one another. This gives the student self confidence in accomplishment with every lesson and a greater sense of responsibility.

What Each Camper Will Need To Bring:

** Campers will bring their own lunches Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, on the final day of camp, Friday, Dou"B"le J Farm will provide either a cookout (or pizza, bad weather option).

Drop your camper off each day at 9:00 and pick up at 3:00 for four days of horse adventure. If you need your camper to come earlier in the morning or stay a little longer in the afternoon, before and after activities are available and the cost is $10/hr. For the before and after activities please call for arrangements. Each day includes mounted lessons, information on horsemanship safety, horse related crafts and activities, as well as an introduction to the wholesome farm life. Campers participate with pride in the routine hands on care and handling of horses and find out what it really means to own a horse.

Cost is $275 per rider with a $75 non-refundable deposit to hold child’s place (credited towards the camp fee). If you register by May 1st for either camp the cost is $250 per rider. Mail the completed registration form or call Judy at (205) 792-4940. It is our genuine hope that our campers will become life-long horse enthusiasts with memories that last a lifetime. NO REFUNDS for non-attendance after camp begins.

SIBLING DISCOUNTS
If you sign up siblings,the first pays full price and additional siblings 10% off.

The deadline for sign up for the July Camp is Thursday, July 14, 2011.

You will be notified if the July camp is canceled by 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 17, 2011.

The $75 deposit for the camps will be refunded only if the camps are canceled.

Each spectator or any person participating in any activity must respect our barn rules.

Payment Options:

You can pay the deposit now and the balance is due the first day of camp. Or if you have paid the deposit you can pay the remainder of the camp fee online. Or if you just want to pay the full camp fee that option is also available.

About Young Rider Camps

Dou"B"le J Farm offers Saturday fall and winter camps for children ages 5 through 10 and also camps through age 18 who have seldom ridden and are looking for an introduction to riding basics in a safe and fun environment.

Youth Rider Camps

Fall and Winter Young Riders Camps consist of Saturday instead of week-long sessions to accommodate the school schedule. Riders may register for as many of the Fall day camps as they want. Even though Fall and Winter camp is only one day each camper will get time on the horse with an instructor. See the "Camp Activities" section below for a full list of other activities offered during this camp.

Camp Activities

Each rider learns basic horse care skills, such as grooming, hoof cleaning, tack care, barn chores, and how to maintain the well being of horses. Each child will ride and will receive individual attention while riding. The emphasis of this camp is on safety and respect for the horse and his care. Since the campers are young, the riding is taught by an experienced instructor with riders on the horse one at a time. The instructor stays with the child while on the horse and helps them maintain proper position while guiding the horse. The 30 minute riding time is shared by the group. 10-15 campers are enrolled in each session. Campers are organized into groups of 5-7 and rotate through four 30 minute stations:

Grooming
Riding
Horse chores
Craft activity teaching horse care

Equipment

Camp participants will please wear the following:

Long pants
Sturdy boots (no sneakers)
Riding helmet

Riding helmets can be purchased at any tack store. Riders may borrow a helmet from Dou"B"le J Farm if they don't have one.

Horsemanship Merit Badge

Horsemanship

Horsemanship builds confidence and is offered to horse lovers of all skill levels. Covered topics include safety, grooming, saddling, bridling, mounting and dismounting, proper handling and daily care. Learn about our horse facility and careers that are associated with horses, safe and proper clothing for horseback riding, and how to properly locate and identify the principal body parts of a horse. A Liability Release Form will have to be completed and signed for each participant.

Horse Fan

The Horse Fan Lesson is a total of 3 hours. The first hour and 15 mins. is an overview of the topics mentioned above. Next, your group will have the opportunity to ride a horse or pony for 45 mins. (led on a lead line) This 3 hour session is $25.00 per person for groups of 10-20.

Horseback Rider

The Horseback Rider Lesson is a total of 3 hours. The first hour covers grooming, saddling, bridling. The second hour includes instruction on proper mounting and dismounting and how to effectively communicate to your horse during a mounted riding lesson (not on a lead line). The last hour is the riding (not on a lead line). It is recommended that students participate in two mounted riding sessions in order to learn how to exhibit these skills independently. This 3 hour session is $30.00 per person for groups of 8. Larger groups will have separate riding times.

Back in 1982 my first foal was born and I named her JJ Cherokee Princess. I knew I had a long road ahead of me because I had never trained a horse before and she was a fireball. As the years went by Princess became 2 years old and ready to break. I did the best I could with her and she turned out to be a good riding horse.

Years later, I met a man who I learned alot about horses and an easy way to get them started from the ground up.

I still use the techniques he taught me and I have positive results with all the horses that I train.

I can give your horse a new attitude, and with most all the horses I train I can create a gentle, well mannered animal. Because each horse responds to training differently, the amount of time needed to fully trian the horse varies.

My First Horse, Pat

Pat was purchased by my Dad about a mile from our house on March 23, 1978 for $500.oo. He was a strawberry roan stallion that had a very sweet personality. I got a the saddle I am riding in the pictures, bridle, blanket, and grooming brush.

Pat died August 25, 2001 he was 28 years old.

In Memory Of Bojangles

Bojangles "Bo" was purchased October 1997 for Brittney to learn how to ride a horse. We bought him from a horse sale in Uniontown, Alabama. He was not broke to ride except for the rider to be lead.

When Brittney started riding with out the assistance of another person, she gave the finishing touches to breaking him to ride. I remember Bo being so stubborn. Brittney rode him in barrels and arena race and when she finally got him in the gate I had to "jump start" him before he would lope. He never overcame stubborn. Brittney showed him in leadline for many years and when she was older she starting riding him in Pony Walk Trot and Pony Pleasure. She did very well in those classes also. As Brittney got older we bought her a padded horse, Charlie.

Jared started riding Bo when he was 3 years old. He rode him in Pony Walk Trot and Pony Pleasure also and won many trophies. Jared enjoyed Bo also but he was still stubborn. Bo was a very gentle pony for kids. He was used for riding lessons and just general riding with kids all over.

Bo died in September 2008 from old age.

We never knew really how old he was when we bought him. Our vet speculated that he was 9 then. So he would have been 20 at his death.

Hi. My name is Judy Johnson. I have owned horses all of my life with over 35 years experience. Our farm is located on 120 acres south of Moundville on County Road 46. We have completed our 40 x 52 barn that is located near our home. I created this blog to show the development of our farm.

I recently started giving riding lessons and I really enjoy seeing the faces of young children light up when they get on a horse. Riding Camps and Birthday parties are also what we do.

I also train horses from the ground up. "Let me give your horse a new attitude."

Brittney, 17, and Jared, 12, are alot of help with the horses. They have been riding since they were 3 years old.
